The Village Butcher

Wednesday 29th August 2012

Frank Wright gave an entertaining talk at the August meeting of the Society on his life and experiences as a village butcher in Mirfield over more than thirty years.

He spoke about his time as a butcher's boy and his apprenticeship as well as changes in the trade during his lifetime. Frank recounted many amusing tales involving some of the colourful characters he had encountered and about two events he had been involved in with local organisations.

In the first of these he had attempted to make the world's longest sausage - this involved a 6'6" diameter frying pan and produced a 455ft sausage which came tenth among 6,000 entries. He also described another competition in which he created a 104lb beefburger, the biggest made in Britain.
