The Lost Prince: Prince John and the Girl from Halifax

Wednesday 28th October 2015

At the Society’s October meeting David Glover gave a fascinating talk on The Lost Prince: Prince John and the Girl from Halifax.

His presentation interweaved the short life of Prince John, youngest child of George V and Queen Mary, and Winifred Thomas, the daughter of a soldier in the West Riding Regiment who was born in Halifax in 1905. After moving to stay with relatives at Sandringham to relieve an asthmatic condition, Winifred became a childhood friend of Prince John who lived nearby on the Royal Estate. The two became close companions until Prince John died of an epileptic fit in 1919, aged just 13 years. David provided interesting details of the Thomas family’s life in Halifax and Winifred’s later life on a Tea plantation in Assam, India.
