The Society ran a Travel Writing Competition this year for the first time – with the prize being a free place on the Society’s coach trip to Aachen in August.
Information about the competition was sent to all secondary schools in Calderdale and to Calderdale College, and an article appeared in the Halifax Courier too. Entrants had to carry out some research and then write a short article to encourage people to visit Aachen. The entries were of a very high standard and judging was not easy. However, it has been decided that Katie Oliver is the winner. She is a student at Durham University, studying German and Italian – and she entered the competition because she heard about the article in the Courier!
Katie went to Crossley Heath School and lives at Greetland. The Society is delighted that Katie has won this competition and we are looking forward to having her in our group – we are also pleased that Katie’s mother Sharon has decided to come along too! There is no doubt that they will enjoy their week in wonderful Aachen. Final arrangements are now being made for the visit. More than 30 people are going this year – many for the first time. We are all impatiently waiting for the wonderful welcome we always receive from the Aachen people.
