Cloth to the Arabs

At its February meeting the Society enjoyed a fascinating talk by member Donald Pickles about his long career in exporting local textiles to the Middle East when travelling abroad was less straightforward than it is nowadays. He gave details of travels within countries such as Saudi Arabia, Lebanon and Iraq, explaining some of the different ways business is carried out there.

Donald described the growth of business and the esteem in which Yorkshire textiles are held. He also had a wealth of interesting tales about some of the situations he found himself in and the fascinating characters he met along the way. On one occasion he found himself playing for both teams in an impromptu cricket match, mixing business and pleasure! Needless to say, his team won.
