At its May meeting the Society’s Secretary, Patricia Atkinson, gave a fascinating talk on Germs and Microbes. She described how Queen Victoria initiated an investigation into the conditions of working people in the growing industrial cities which led to a revolution in knowledge of the causes of illnesses and diseases and important improvements in public health.
