25 members of the Society have recently returned from a week’s visit to Halifax’s German Twin Town, Aachen where they stayed with local families and enjoyed their warm hospitality. The group included Megan Killerby, winner of the Society’s essay competition for school children. During the visit there was a reception by the Mayoress of Aachen in the Town Hall and guided tours of the special exhibitions commemorating the death 1200 years ago of the Emperor Charlemagne who had his most important palace in the city. Visits were also made to a Government Bunker, set up in case Cold War tensions required evacuation from Bonn, the wine growing area of Dernau and a Glass Museum in Linnich. Shared meals provided the perfect opportunity to renew old friendships and make new ones.
